Wireless access to the Wikipedia by people on-the-go ? Here is the press release: http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=259740 annoucing a preliminary agreement with mobile search services provider AskMeNow.
At first, AskMeKnow will put in place a Beta for a natural language desktop search. If the Beta works out nicely, AskMeNow and the Wikimedia Foundation will launch a free Mobile Wikipedia service allowing users to search using their mobile phones.
Mobile Wikipedia seems small compared to Google's mobile plans.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt has promised more mobile applications “Google is focusing on applications that run on mobile phones... The new model of these phones is going to be person-to-person -with people exchanging videos and other types of data. “It’s sort of SMS gone wild... The sum of that is a whole new platform thing”
"We’ve been, internally, saying ‘mobile, mobile, mobile,’ and the simple reason is everyone here has a mobile phone,” he said. “Instead of saying ‘mobile, mobile, mobile,’ I should be saying ‘apps, apps, apps’.”
Ah, I bet Schmidt meant ODP (on-device-portal).

Hi Dorota
I am back into reding business. I think in our times it is a lazy form of socializing. :)
Google can be a trend-setter or innovation killer. As for my first point they can focus attention of not so mobile users and start commotizing the idea in people's mind. As for the second side of th coin they can start with the application that not so many or very few can develop as a separate company. Maybe open source movement can catch up or a major company but neither has the power to buy YouTube or Google Video plus all the Google Talk and Mail users.
I guess these applications will be cool and useful but I am a little bit scared by the fact that I may get become tempted to be digital all day and everywhere long.
Greetings,
Pawel
Pawel, great to read your comment here! Thank you. And don't be scared, all resistance is futile, you already are a digital addict. It is too late and you know it well.
Best!
Dorota
As long as it's good and useful for humankind, I am all good for it.
OOT: Dorota, check my blog. After a month, your wish has been granted =P
Arifanto, you are fan-tas-tic ! Thanks so much for making my dream coming true (i.e. contemplating my blog in Chinese, Dutch and other languages ! Oh I know that automatic translation is far from perfect, but hell, perfection is not part of my priorities).
Everyone, check this link :http://sodeve.net/ "a software developer in a pursuit of happiness". Take care.
Hi Dorota !
In fact, Wikipedia has been available on mobile phones for some time, but read-only.

Will this new service bring more search features or even edit-on-the-go capabilities ?
Let's see what the future brings !
Best regards,
Jerome
Jérôme, thank you for the comment, you are absolutely right to point out the fact that waht IS news here, is the mobile advanced search feature with AskMeNow. Let us keep an eye on it. Merci !
